Description
Overview
How does Evolve Carbomer 980 Eye Gel (0.2%) lubricate the eye? Evolve Carbomer 980 is an ophthalmic gel designed to treat the symptoms of dry eye syndrome. The active ingredient, Carbomer 980, is a high molecular weight hydrophilic polymer. Unlike standard liquid eye drops (artificial tears) which can drain away through the tear ducts very quickly, Carbomer 980 forms a transparent, viscous matrix on the surface of the eye.
This matrix binds water molecules and holds them against the cornea and conjunctiva, significantly increasing the “retention time” (how long the product stays on the eye). It acts primarily as a substitute for the aqueous (water) and mucin layers of the natural tear film, providing long-lasting hydration and reducing the friction between the eyelid and the eyeball that causes the sensation of grit or sand in the eye.
What is the benefit of the “Shear Thinning” property? A unique physical characteristic of Carbomer 980 is that it is “thixotropic” or shear-thinning. In the bottle and when resting on the eye, it maintains a gel-like consistency to prevent evaporation and drainage. However, when the eyelids move during a blink, the shear force causes the gel to structurally break down and become a liquid. This allows the solution to spread evenly over the eye surface without feeling sticky or causing drag. Once the eye is open and resting again, the structure reforms into a protective gel layer.
Why is the Preservative-Free Multi-Dose system important? Standard multi-dose eye gels often contain preservatives like Benzalkonium Chloride (BAK) to prevent bacterial growth. However, BAK is a known irritant that can damage the corneal surface with long-term use and degrade contact lenses. Evolve Carbomer 980 utilises a specialised multi-dose bottle technology (often featuring a blue tip) with a sophisticated system of filters and valves. This system ensures the air entering the bottle is sterile and prevents contaminated liquid from flowing back in. This allows the product to remain sterile for up to 3 months after opening without the need for chemical preservatives, making it much safer for chronic dry eye sufferers and those with sensitive eyes.
Who Is It For
Who is Evolve Carbomer 980 Eye Gel suitable for? Evolve Carbomer 980 is suitable for adults, the elderly, and children. It is specifically indicated for the relief of Dry Eye Syndrome (Keratoconjunctivitis Sicca) ranging from mild to moderate-severe. It is an ideal choice for patients who find that standard watery drops (hypromellose) do not last long enough and require too frequent application. It is suitable for individuals with sensitive eyes who cannot tolerate preservatives.
Usage Instructions
How to apply Evolve Carbomer 980 Eye Gel correctly? Evolve Carbomer 980 is for ocular use only.
Priming: The Evolve bottle has a unique filter system. Before the very first use, you may need to pump the bottle several times to bring the gel to the tip.
Hygiene: Wash hands thoroughly before use.
Positioning: Tilt the head backwards and gently pull the lower eyelid down to create a “pocket.”
Application: Hold the bottle upside down over the eye. Squeeze the bottle until one drop falls into the pocket. Because of the filter system, you may need to squeeze harder than with a standard bottle.
Dispersion: Release the eyelid and blink slowly a few times to spread the gel (the blinking turns the gel to liquid).
Frequency: The usual dosage is one drop in each affected eye, 3 to 4 times a day, or as directed by a specialist.
Warnings
What is the effect on vision immediately after use? Because Evolve Carbomer 980 is a gel with higher viscosity than water, it will cause temporary blurred vision immediately after application. This is normal. Users must not drive, operate machinery, or perform tasks requiring clear vision until the gel has spread and vision has cleared completely (usually takes a few minutes).
When must Evolve Carbomer 980 Eye Gel not be used? Do not use if you are allergic to Carbomers. Avoid touching the tip of the bottle to the eye, eyelashes, or fingers, as this can physically contaminate the sterile nozzle.
Alternatives
Common alternatives to Evolve Carbomer 980 Eye Gel? If Evolve Carbomer 980 is not suitable, common alternatives include:
Viscotears Liquid Gel: The traditional market leader for carbomer gels, though the standard tube version contains preservatives (single-dose units are available preservative-free).
Clinitas Carbomer Gel: Another tube-based carbomer gel, effective but typically contains cetrimide (preservative) in the multi-dose tube.
Artelac Nighttime Gel: A heavier formulation often used specifically for overnight protection.
Hylo-Forte: A preservative-free drop containing Sodium Hyaluronate (0.2%) rather than carbomer; it is liquid but highly viscous, offering a different type of lubrication for severe dry eye.
Xailin Gel: A carbomer-based gel that uses a “disappearing preservative” (perborate) that turns to water and oxygen on contact with the eye.
