Overview

How does loperamide hydrochloride work? Imodium Instant Melts contain the active ingredient loperamide hydrochloride which functions as a potent antimotility agent. Loperamide targets the opioid receptors within the myenteric plexus of the large intestine. Upon binding to these receptors the medication suppresses the release of acetylcholine and prostaglandins which are the neurotransmitters responsible for triggering muscle contractions in the gut. This pharmacological action significantly reduces propulsive peristalsis which is the wave-like movement that pushes contents through the digestive tract. By inhibiting these contractions Imodium Instant Melts slow down the transit of faecal matter allowing the bowel to return to a more normalised rhythm.

How does the orodispersible formulation aid absorption? Imodium Instant Melts utilise a unique freeze-dried technology that creates a fast-dissolving orodispersible tablet. Unlike conventional compressed tablets that require fluid to aid swallowing, these tablets are designed to disintegrate instantly upon contact with saliva on the tongue. This rapid dissolution means the medication is swallowed with the patient’s own saliva without the need for water. This delivery system is particularly clinically valuable for patients suffering from nausea or vomiting alongside diarrhoea as it eliminates the need to ingest significant volumes of liquid which could trigger the gag reflex.

What is the impact on fluid and electrolyte balance? During an episode of acute diarrhoea the rapid passage of intestinal contents prevents the colon from performing its primary function of absorbing water and salts. This leads to loose watery stools and a risk of dehydration. By extending the transit time Imodium Instant Melts increase the duration of contact between the intestinal lumen and the mucosal lining. This prolonged exposure facilitates the enhanced reabsorption of water and essential electrolytes such as sodium and potassium. This process increases the viscosity and bulk of the stool and helps to mitigate the systemic effects of fluid loss.

Who Is It For

Who are Imodium Instant Melts suitable for? Imodium Instant Melts are suitable for adults and children aged 12 years and over. They are specifically indicated for the symptomatic treatment of acute diarrhoea. They are also licensed for use in adults aged 18 years and over who have been diagnosed with Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) by a doctor to manage acute flare-ups. This format is the ideal choice for individuals with dysphagia (difficulty swallowing) or for active people and travellers who may not have immediate access to water when symptoms strike. Imodium Instant Melts are not suitable for children under 12 years of age.

Usage Instructions

How to take Imodium Instant Melts correctly? Because Imodium Instant Melts are fragile they should not be pushed through the foil packaging as this can crush the tablet. Users should peel back the foil lid carefully and tip the tablet into their hand. The tablet should be placed on top of the tongue where it will dissolve rapidly. The resulting liquid can then be swallowed. For acute diarrhoea in adults and children over 12 the initial dose is two tablets followed by one tablet after each loose stool.

What is the recommended dosage? Users must adhere to the maximum daily dose of six tablets within a 24-hour period. For medically diagnosed IBS the dosage can be adjusted to maintain comfortable bowel function but should not exceed the maximum limit. Imodium Instant Melts are intended for short-term symptomatic relief. If symptoms of acute diarrhoea persist for more than 48 hours usage should be discontinued and medical advice sought.

Warnings

When is this medication contraindicated? Imodium Instant Melts should not be used in cases of acute dysentery which is characterised by blood in the stool and high fever. The medication is also contraindicated for patients with acute ulcerative colitis or bacterial enterocolitis caused by invasive organisms such as Salmonella, Shigella, or Campylobacter. In these conditions inhibiting peristalsis can impair the body’s ability to clear the pathogen and toxins which may increase the risk of toxic megacolon.

Safety advice and ingredients? Imodium Instant Melts contain aspartame which is a source of phenylalanine. Therefore this medication may be harmful to people with phenylketonuria. The product also contains mint flavouring which may cause a reaction in sensitive individuals. Loperamide is metabolised by the liver so patients with hepatic dysfunction should use this product with caution. As the medication can cause fatigue or dizziness users should assess their response before driving or operating machinery.

Alternatives

Common alternatives to Imodium Instant Melts? If Imodium Instant Melts are not suitable or a different therapeutic approach is preferred common alternatives include: Imodium Original Capsules: The classic hard capsule format containing the same 2mg dose of loperamide hydrochloride for those who prefer swallowing tablets with water. Imodium Plus Comfort Tablets: A dual-action formula combining loperamide with simeticone to treat both diarrhoea and the painful abdominal distension caused by trapped wind. Dioralyte Sachets: Oral rehydration therapy that does not stop bowel movements but focuses on replacing the glucose and electrolytes lost during diarrhoea to prevent dehydration. Enterosgel Suspension: An intestinal adsorbent paste that binds to bacterial toxins and viruses in the gut and removes them naturally without pharmacologically stopping gut motility.
