Description
Overview
How do Calpol Six Plus FastMelts relieve pain and fever? Calpol Six Plus FastMelts provide effective relief from pain and high temperatures using Paracetamol (250mg per tablet). Just like the infant suspension, the active ingredient works by inhibiting the production of prostaglandins in the brain, which resets the body’s thermostat to lower a fever and blocks pain signals from reaching the central nervous system. This makes them highly effective for treating common childhood ailments such as headaches, earaches, toothache, and cold and flu symptoms.
Why is the FastMelt formula beneficial? The defining feature of this product is its orodispersible formulation. Unlike standard tablets that must be swallowed whole with water, Calpol Six Plus FastMelts are designed to dissolve directly on the tongue without the need for a drink. This transforms into a pleasant Strawberry flavoured paste that is easy to swallow. This format is a significant advantage for older children who have outgrown liquid medicines but still struggle with the sensation of swallowing solid pills (dysphagia). It also offers convenience for parents on the go, as no spoon or water is required.
Who Is It For
Who are Calpol Six Plus FastMelts suitable for? Calpol Six Plus FastMelts are suitable for children aged 6 to 12 years (and adults who prefer melting tablets). They are specifically indicated for children who have graduated from the lower-strength infant suspensions but find the volume of the “Six Plus” liquid too much to take. They are an ideal choice for keeping in a school bag, travel kit, or handbag, as the blister packs are portable and mess-free compared to sticky bottles.
Usage Instructions
How to take Calpol Six Plus FastMelts correctly? To ensure the correct dose is administered:
Peel: Peel back the foil from the blister pack. Do not push the tablet through the foil, as they are fragile and may break.
Place: Place the tablet gently on the child’s tongue.
Dissolve: Allow the tablet to dissolve in the mouth. As it melts, the child can swallow the strawberry paste. No water is needed, but a drink can be given afterwards if preferred.
What is the correct dosage? Dosage is based on age:
6 – 9 Years: 1 tablet up to 4 times a day.
9 – 12 Years: 2 tablets up to 4 times a day.
12 – 16 Years: 2 to 3 tablets up to 4 times a day.
Adults (16+): 2 to 4 tablets up to 4 times a day.
Warnings
When must Calpol Six Plus FastMelts be used with caution? Frequency: Leave at least 4 hours between doses. Do not give more than 4 doses in any 24-hour period. Duration: Do not give to children for more than 3 days without consulting a doctor. Dietary: Contains Aspartame (a source of Phenylalanine). This must be avoided by individuals with Phenylketonuria (PKU).
Alternatives
Common alternatives to Calpol Six Plus FastMelts? If FastMelts are not suitable due to taste or preference, common alternatives include:
Calpol Six Plus Suspension: The liquid version of the same medicine (250mg/5ml), suitable for children who prefer swallowing syrup to dissolving tablets.
Nurofen for Children Meltlets: A similar dissolving tablet containing Ibuprofen (Strawberry flavour), offering an anti-inflammatory alternative for pain and fever.
Junior Paracetamol Tablets: Standard, small swallowable tablets (often unbranded) for children who are confident swallowing pills and do not want the “sweet” taste.
Solpa-Plus: Soluble paracetamol tablets that dissolve in water to make a drink, often preferred by older children or teenagers.
