Paramol Tablets Overview

Paramol Tablets are a pain relief medicine used to treat mild to moderate pain when standard painkillers such as paracetamol or ibuprofen alone have not provided sufficient relief. They contain two active ingredients: paracetamol, which helps relieve pain and reduce fever, and dihydrocodeine tartrate, an opioid painkiller that works on the central nervous system to reduce the perception of pain.

Paramol Tablets are intended for the short-term treatment of acute pain and should only be used as directed. Because they contain an opioid, they are not suitable for long-term use unless advised by a healthcare professional.

What is acute pain?

Acute pain is pain that develops suddenly, usually as a result of injury, illness or a medical procedure. It serves as the body’s warning signal that something is wrong and typically improves as the underlying cause heals.

Unlike chronic pain, which persists for months or longer, acute pain is generally temporary and often responds well to appropriate pain relief.

Common causes of acute pain include:

  • headaches and migraines
  • toothache
  • muscular strains and sprains
  • back pain
  • period pain
  • pain following minor surgery or injury

Symptoms associated with acute pain

The way pain is experienced varies depending on its cause and severity. Symptoms may include:

  • aching or throbbing discomfort
  • sharp or stabbing pain
  • tenderness around the affected area
  • reduced movement due to pain
  • temporary interference with normal daily activities

If pain is severe, unexplained or persists despite treatment, medical advice should be sought.

How Do Paramol Tablets Work?

Paramol Tablets relieve pain through two complementary mechanisms.

Paracetamol helps reduce the production of chemicals involved in transmitting pain signals and regulating body temperature. This makes it effective for relieving pain and reducing fever.

Dihydrocodeine works by binding to opioid receptors within the central nervous system. This changes the way the brain interprets pain, helping to reduce discomfort.

Together, these ingredients provide greater pain relief than paracetamol alone for some types of acute pain.

How this differs from anti-inflammatory medicines

Unlike medicines such as ibuprofen or naproxen, Paramol Tablets do not reduce inflammation.

Instead, they primarily relieve pain by acting on the central nervous system. For pain caused mainly by inflammation, such as certain joint or muscle injuries, an anti-inflammatory medicine may be more appropriate if suitable for the individual.

Active Ingredients

Paramol Tablets contain two active ingredients that work together to relieve pain. Each tablet contains 500 mg of paracetamol and 7.46 mg of dihydrocodeine tartrate. Paracetamol is a widely used analgesic (painkiller) and antipyretic that helps relieve pain and reduce fever by acting on pain signals within the brain. Dihydrocodeine tartrate is an opioid analgesic that works on opioid receptors in the central nervous system to alter the way pain is perceived. By combining these two ingredients, Paramol Tablets provide stronger pain relief than paracetamol alone for many types of moderate pain.

How to Use Paramol Tablets

Dosing guidance

Paramol Tablets should always be taken exactly as directed in the patient information leaflet or by your healthcare professional.

For adults and young people aged 16 years and over, the usual dose is one or two tablets every four to six hours as needed, with a maximum of eight tablets in 24 hours.

The tablets should be swallowed whole with water and may be taken with or without food.

Important usage advice

Paramol should only be used for the shortest duration necessary to control pain. Because it contains dihydrocodeine, prolonged use increases the risk of dependence and withdrawal symptoms.

Do not take Paramol together with any other medicine containing paracetamol, as exceeding the recommended daily dose can cause serious liver damage.

Alcohol should be avoided while taking Paramol, as it may increase drowsiness and the risk of side effects.

Safety, Warnings and Side Effects

Like all medicines, Paramol Tablets can cause side effects, although not everyone experiences them.

Common side effects include drowsiness, dizziness, constipation, nausea and vomiting. Some people may also experience dry mouth or feel light-headed.

Because Paramol contains an opioid, it can impair concentration and reaction times. If you feel sleepy or dizzy after taking it, do not drive or operate machinery.

Long-term or excessive use can lead to opioid dependence and may increase the risk of medication overuse headaches if used frequently for headaches.

Paramol Tablets are not generally recommended during pregnancy unless a doctor considers them necessary. Opioid medicines may affect the unborn baby, particularly if used close to delivery or for prolonged periods.

Dihydrocodeine can also pass into breast milk, so Paramol is not usually recommended while breastfeeding. Always seek medical advice before using this medicine during pregnancy or while breastfeeding.

Who Are Paramol Tablets For?

Paramol Tablets are intended for adults and young people aged 16 years and over who require short-term relief from moderate pain that has not responded to paracetamol, ibuprofen or aspirin alone.

They may be appropriate for people who need stronger pain relief for a limited period, provided there are no medical reasons preventing their use.

Because Paramol contains an opioid medicine, treatment should be kept as short as possible.
